As a producer he runs Moserfilm which focuses on documentaries, narrative films and music videos. His works were awarded and selected to International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam, DOK.fest Munich, Montreal International Documentary Festival, DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, Bel Docs and many more. He has worked in over 30 countries across the globe.
The One Love Machine band are a scrappy crew. They have an affinity for punk rock, and members of the band play the bass, drums and flute. Oh, and they’re all robots. The band is made up of scrap metal animatronics, created from salvaged junk from scrapyards around Berlin. For creator of the band Kolja Kugler, it’s all about giving new life to discarded objects.
The celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday this year is reaching a crescendo in Germany. The composer and pianist was born in Bonn on December 16, 1770, and his musical legacy carries on. In this reel, we meet concert pianists putting a new spin on Beethoven’s work. Susanne Kessel, for one, put out a call to composers for 250 new piano pieces inspired by Beethoven and is now in the midst of performing them. Elsewhere, the duo known as Pianotainment is using humor and serious piano chops to make the work of the likes of Beethoven accessible to all. We wrap up this ode to Beethoven with a visit to a museum full of self-playing musical instruments. And, yes, some of them even play Beethoven.
An abandoned coal and steel production plant is now an adventure park in Duisburg, Germany. It’s called Landschaftspark, which translates to Landscape Park. The property still looks like an industrial site from far away, but every square inch has been repurposed for recreation. Think high ropes courses, outdoor climbing areas, a huge tube slide. And the largest scuba diving pool in Europe—housed in what was once a storage tank for natural gas.
Suspended 650 feet in the air between towering sandstone rocks, the Bastei Bridge is a Victorian era engineering marvel. The residents of Spreewald, Germany, are proud of their gherkins, as they should be. A Spreewald resident came up with the concept of pickling cucumbers—which grow in abundance in the region—over 150 years ago. Today, tourists visit the area to eat the salty, crunchy treat and visit the Gherkin Museum founded by Karl-Heinz Stark just after the reunification of Germany. Sixty miles outside of Berlin, Spreewald is a UNESCO biosphere reserve full of picturesque woodlands and a network of waterways. The best way to get around is in a punt, which is a water barge. Manfred, a punt driver, takes us on a scenic cruise through Spreewald before we meet up with Susi Beesk, a local celebrity who holds the title of Super-Gherkin Queen.
Talk about choice real estate—the Eltz Castle in Wierschem, Germany, is a spectacular medieval structure that sits within a valley, surrounded by serene forestland. The Eltz family has owned this piece of enchanting beauty since 1157, and has kept residence at the estate for 34 generations. Although none of the Eltz clan currently occupies the 120-room castle full time, it is open to visitors, who travel from all over to witness the vast collection of historic treasures, including weapons, armor and art.
