At a Write Your Block workshop led by Spells Writing Lab, anonprofit that brings free writing programs to Philadelphia children in schools and summer camp, kids wrote about their most treasured place—their neighborhoods—using their five senses to conjure a corner of Philadelphia that is at once unique and familiar to anyone who lives here.

As a refugee from Nepal, when Ghanashyam Guatam finally became an American citizen it was the first time he belonged to any country. He wants to go to college, but it seems impossible to overcome the obstacles against him: a failing school system, a family unfamiliar with the college process, and not enough money to pay application fees let alone tuition even if he is accepted.

Every Tuesday afternoon and every Saturday morning, rain or shine, a group of girls gathers at Beckett Life Center in North Philly for something both totally simple and totally deep: Running. For some, it’s because they have always wanted to run track; others say it’s because the girls and coaches offer encouragement, when they normally are the victim of bullying.

Each year about 850-900 refugees from all over the world are resettled in Philadelphia. And while they can bring very little from their homeland to their new life, they carry with them a past full of trauma, persecution and fear. When they move here, to a new country, a new city, and a new culture, the transition often exacerbates the already existing issues. The answer is community building.
