Street artists reclaim Rio's African heritage in the Olympic port district, by repainting a historic neighborhood with Afro-Brazilian and African-inspired murals. The project is meant to make Rio's African roots visible, and to contrast with the corporate-sponsored "Olympic Boulevard" that was renovated a few blocks away.
In Rio, people are using virtual reality to build empathy for young black men who are victims of violence at alarming rates, especially by police. For 5 days, the public will be able to don virtual reality goggles to see what life is like for low-income, black youth through interactive dramas. Family members of young victims killed in Rio will also participate.
As the 2016 summer Olympics open, Rio residents take to the streets to protest spending on the Olympics instead of on pressing social needs.
