For a warrior, hands are more important than sword. When there are no hands, sword becomes meaningless. That’s why a warrior with no hands cannot be a good warrior, just the way a shepherd with no hands cannot be a good shepherd. But it seems the will of a man gives you much more than hands and that appears in Ibrahim’s story. During the process of Anfal - a genocide against the Iraqi Kurds by Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1980s, Ahmed lost his hands and one eye. He touched a mine in Ranya’s Betwata village, which the Iraqi regime landed for the Kurdish rebellions -Peshmerga- in the mountainous region of Kurdistan. Ahmed has been a shepherd for the past 43 years. “I lost my hands, one eye and I wear glasses to see with the other eye. This makes my job harder,” he says. But harder does not mean impossible in his story. He is 53 years old, each morning Ahmed wakes up at 5 and go to the mountains with the goats he takes care of and comes back home when it gets dark. “I am an old man. I have disabilities. I need to rest,” Ahmed says. But sometimes life shows no mercy and people have to struggle with it.
