Daw Yaw Shen learned to play the nose flute, a traditional instrument of her Chin heritage when she was 17 years old. Now, at 92 years of age she's the last of her generation and one of only two people who can play the unique instrument. She is one of the 135 ethnic minorities in Myanmar trying to protect their culture and history.

The current conflict in Rakhine State causing 600,000 people to flee their homes has sparked a lot of hate speech. Few are standing up vocally in support of peace and for the Rohingya. But a group of storytellers are targeting kids, in schools and refugee camps, conducting workshops and recording the first kids books about peace and reconciliation in Burmese. Fighting the racism with laughter.

Burma’s second largest lake is experiencing a change in climate and an increase in pollution. Locals living on Inle Lake in Shan State say the rise in severe droughts combined with deforestation in the area are contributing to the deterioration of the lake. Farmers and artisans are worried about their future and are calling for better conservation of the lake.

In Burmese culture there is a saying – “For a woman, your beauty is your hair” – and the longer it is, the better. Well-groomed, glossy hair decorated with jasmine flowers is as quintessentially Burmese. While hairstyles are changing, long black hair still retains its timeless appeal. All of which makes Buddhist abbot Sayadaw U Weiponla’s request for donations of hair all the more merit-making.
