Memorial Service for the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Johannesburg at the Anglican Cathedral of St Mary The Virgin.
A significant memorial service at the Anglican Cathedral of St Mary The Virgin Johannesburg, where the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu was ordained and became Dean of the Cathedral in 1975, and also the first black bishop of Johannesburg in 1985. A few members of the late Archbishops family where in attendance, so too where those of the congregation, the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Dr Mpho Phalatse and her team and the media, to witness and share in the requiem memorial service for the late Archbishop Emeritus Deomond Tutu.
Processions of the Anglican church started the event accompanied by burning incense and the organ playing. Prayers were to follow, complimented with choir singing and hymns. Key speakers such as the Mayor were invited to say some words about the Archbishop, and even members of other religious groups would promote the Archbishops history, his religious strength and pursuit of South Africa's freedom from oppression and need for justice.
Members of his family were present to light candles for Tutu with the Mayor and then give short speeches. The church continued to share stories of Tutu and his position in that specific cathedral and his impact on the country. After the tributes, messages and offertories there was a final thanksgiving, communion, invitational prayers and final blessings for Tutu.
