Yuanchen Liu is from Wuhan, China. He worked as a journalist and photographer in China before moving to the United States in 2009 to pursue his Masters degree in News & Documentary at New York University. His graduation thesis and debut feature documentary, To the Light, a film about coal miners in Sichuan, China has won the Best Filmmaker Award at the 35th Margaret Mead Film Festival in 2011, held at the American Museum of Natural History. Yuanchen has since worked for Sinovision, Inc. a Chinese language TV network based in the New York City; formed and led the feature department there and developed documentary series with focus on the Chinese immigrants community. He left Sinovision in Oct. 2013 in seeking independent creativity and is now a producer at Shearwater Films, a documentary production company he co-founded in New York in 2011, which had produced feature documentaries and mini docs for international media clients including the NY Times and Setanta Sports Ireland. Yuanchen's experience covering stories in underdeveloped communities gave him the belief that documentaries can be a powerful tool to bring attention to pressing social issues.
