MEXICO MIGRANT PROTEST
Hundreds of migrants from Central and South America gathered in front of the National Institute of Migration in Mexico City on Tuesday to protest the deaths of 55 migrants who died in a truck crash last week.
The demonstrators held banners reading "No human being is illegal" and "We are not criminals, we are workers" as they gathered in solidarity with fellow migrants.
"Many died, and unfortunately, (their) families have been left crying because they had a dream, a purpose to help their families prosper," said Irma Flores, a Honduran migrant.
A cargo truck jammed with people who appeared to be Central American migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge over a highway in the Mexican state of Chiapas, Thursday, killing at least 55 people and injuring more than a hundred.
Dead and injured migrants jumbled into a pile inside the collapsed freight container, with some struggling to extract themselves from the weight of bodies piled atop them.
In recent months, Mexican authorities have tried to block migrants from walking in large groups toward the U.S. border, but the clandestine and illicit flow of migrants smuggling has continued.
