Sony Artisan of Imagery Zabrina Deng is on a mission to capture portraits of San Francisco’s Chinatown’s unsung heroes. Follow along her photographic journey as she celebrates the triumphs and challenges and highlights the beauty of these incredible individuals.
This series of portraits celebrate the unsung, unseen women who make Chinatown what it is: a thriving community where immigrants come to set their roots and where 2nd and 3rd generation Chinese come to be reminded of their roots. Each woman profiled has a story of challenges and triumphs, and we celebrate their professional and personal success through portraiture, bringing out their beauty away from the mundane. As we make our way through the images, important mainstays of the neighborhood and community emerge—that of a small business owner, wife, pianist, merchant, baker, waitress, poet, fashion designer, grandma, opera singer, dancer, musician, and retiree. These women from all different walks of life but with common bonds of deep roots in the Chinatown community.

Space has Memory “In the darkest hour, that’s where the light shines.”We are in a Vietnamese restaurant with a long history. The courtyard is filled with tropical green plants and the cool tiles on the ground. This space, the Le Colonial, through the baptism of decades, brings fond memories of San Francisco residents (birthdays, weddings, wedding anniversary, first date). After experiencing the ups and downs of city development and expansion, this building is still – Thriving strong, strength is made.
