Matteo Bastianelli (b. 1985) is a freelance documentary photographer, filmmaker, certified drone operator and video editor based in Rome, Italy. A National Geographic Magazine contributor and member of Italy’s National Order of Journalists since 2009, he focuses on long-term projects related to social, environmental, and human rights issues, with a particular interest in the consequences of war. His work has been published by major outlets including National Geographic, CNN, TIME, Der Spiegel, and The New York Times, and commissioned by NGOs like Amnesty International and Médecins Sans Frontières. His projects have been exhibited internationally and awarded by PDN, Getty Images, and BIF&ST. Notable works include coverage of Yemen’s civil war, Mexico’s social crises, and the impact of COVID-19 on Rome’s marginalized communities, supported by the National Geographic Society.
