We hired Matteo to edit some existing footage about mental health in Nigeria. Matteo was quick to respond and easy to talk to. We communicated via email, Skype and text with no problem. He was able to understand the creative brief and bring his own unique perspective. He finished the project on time and took care to deliver all materials and formats upon completion. Hundreds of civilians in military clothing blend into the forest of Bulgaria: they are the guardians of the border. Following the barrier of barbed wire and concrete built in 2013, border authorities and Frontex agents, have been flanked by the “Vasil Levski” Bulgarian Military Veterans Union and the “BNO Shipka” Bulgarian National Movement.
The Syrian war began in 2011 and, in four years, has seen an exodus of more than 3 million refugees. Who doesn't choose the sea-route, like 22-year-old Mohamad Al Masalmeh, with its interminable voyages of hope aboard makeshift vessels, is obliged to knock on Europe's gateway, Bulgaria. After 1 year in the refugee camp, Mohamad escaped and travelled illegally from Bulgaria to Germany.
Time seems to have stopped at the Industrial Revolution in the 800's, amid decadent buildings together with the traditional fascination of the fishermen that result in a neorealist postcard image. It is the historic centre of the Magna Graecia surrounded by a contaminated sea with its past floating back up to the surface. The backdrop is that of the steel-work hub in Taranto. The largest in Europe and also the most polluted.

Where suffering, hope and black humour outline a common Bosnian identity born, or perhaps only survived, from the ashes of the former Yugoslavia.
