I'm a documentary filmmaker and camerawoman with a passion for social justice. Armed with little more than a camera and backpack, I have traveled the world documenting stories from the margins, inspired by legions of women, workers, activists and young people dedicating their lives and loves to social change. From Aids orphans in Kenya, green truck drivers in Long Beach, grandmother abalone divers in Japan and maids in Las Vegas, I'm constantly inspired by stories that not only move us, but move us to action. My films have won awards in film festivals and my work been broadcast on PBS, Al Jazeera, BBC and CBC, but I am most proud of the work I am now doing with GlobalGirl Media, www.globalgirlmedia.org, a non-profit which empowers young women from under-served communities in digital journalism. AMASAN: WOMEN OF THE SEA
A short documentary that looks at the dying art of the Amasan, or Sea Women of Shirahama, Japan, women who plumb the depths of the ocean without any technical diving equipment, holding their breath for up to two minutes at a time. They dive for Abalone, a prized culinary delicacy, fast disappearing from the world's oceans because of over-fishing.
