I’m a working DP / Lighting Cameraman / Filmmaker with over 25 years experience in the Seattle film and TV market, currently based out of Bozeman, Montana (https://www.detourpictures.com). Tapping into my studio & broadcast experience, I work hard to implement network quality lighting into my corporate films and the various TV/web shows that I shoot and field-produce. I graduated with a B.S. in Motion Picture Production from Montana State University, and also studied broadcasting at the University of Idaho. I'm motivated by stories that matter, and inspired by the power of film to connect people across the planet. My work in documentary film includes working as a producer, camera operator, and post-production support for Makoshika, an award-winning film about the social impacts of oil's boom and bust in my home state of Montana. I also directed, edited and shot Banking on Trust, a film exploring sustainable poverty solutions through microloans in Argentina. My skills as a solo filmmaker have also sent me to Mexico multiple times to produce outreach videos for non-profit organizations in the San Quintín Valley.

Erik Petersen was a newspaper photographer for over a decade before leaving to pursue a freelance business. His work now includes editorial, commercial and outdoor photography and filmmaking. He also teaches visual journalism as an adjunct professor at the University of Montana. He directed and produced “The Hard Way”, a documentary about an 89-year-old ultra runner. The film was featured at the Banff Mountain Film Festival, Telluride Mountainfilm, Five Point Film Festival and dozens of others around the world. His latest film, “The Ride” was selected as a finalist for the 2018 Banff Mountain Film Festival.

He then landed in Bozeman Montana, and attended Film School Graduating at the top of his class with Honors, Dean's List, and Cinematography grants for completing his first short films. Since then, he has worked on shows filming in South America, Australia, and Alaska as a Documentary Director of Photography.
