I was born in Bogotá, Colombia. For over 15 years, I have worked as a photo-journalist, covering stories and documenting the life of minority ethnic groups in Asia, Central America and South America. I have worked as director and cinematographer in numerous short films and commercials. I'm a passionate storyteller, educator, consultant and speaker about video production for social media and visual storytelling. Her life experiences, connectibility and sense of humor have made her a sought-after keynote speaker and emcee. Tamara is a freelance journalist, talk show host and documentary filmmaker, focusing on social justice and dedicated to creating transformative social change through excellence in journalism. Her areas of expertise include: social justice and political issues, nationally and internationally, particularly in Sudan, South Sudan and Darfur, and other parts of the globe where there is little or no news coverage about crimes against humanity and genocide. Her documentary short film, “The Long Journey Home,” was accepted into the 2009 Hollywood Film Festival, “HollyShorts.” Her work has been featured on numerous news networks including CNN, ABC News, HDNet's World Report, BBC, Al Jazeera, Al Jazeera America, WB 2 News, FOX News, as well on as a number of radio stations and newspapers over the past 20 years. As a correspondent she has extensive experience in covering a variety of historical issues and stories like the Columbine massacre and the Aurora Movie Theater shootings to the massive floods in Colorado the summer of 2013. She’s also experienced in covering major hot button topics like the gun rights debate and marriage equality. Tamara has also traveled to Uganda to interview child soldiers as well as to Rwanda where she reported on that country’s post genocide challenges and successes. She covered the devastating earthquake in Haiti and embedded with U.S. Army and Iraqi Security forces to report on yet another untold story: U.S. and Coalition Forces training, mentoring and empowering Iraqis before the U.S. pulled out of the war-torn country. Her challenging relationship with her father who was gone most of her childhood helped her develop her independent, tenacious character which lead to her becoming a journalist focused on social justice. Gabriela Díaz Arp is an independent director and producer passionate about the ways visual language can deepen human understanding and connection. She has directed and produced a number of independent films, exhibits and interactive experiences, as well as co-founded production companies Rabbit Raccoon and Las Palmas Studio. Some of her clients include New York Times, Blue Chalk Media, CNN International, Univision, Emory University and the United Nations. She is currently working on her first feature film in her motherland of Puerto Rico. The film, Matininó, tells the story of a multi-generational family of women transforming their experience with domestic violence and misogyny into a science fiction film. Her last film, Meeting a Monster, which explores the memories and motivations of former white supremacist Angela King through a virtual reality experience, premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and was shown at festivals around the world including Cannes NEXT, Sheffield Doc Fest, Atlanta Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival. Gabriela has a Master's in Visual Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been a Knight Fellow with the Sundance Institute, a participant in Oculus’s VR for Good program, and most recently a Studio IX grantee, honoring her work as both a mother and filmmaker.
