I’m a documentary filmmaker, producer and photographer currently based in Portland, Oregon. Previously, I was a video producer at The Oregonian and Blue Chalk Media in Portland and before that, I worked on the photo desk at the Chicago Tribune. I received my Master’s in photojournalism from Ohio University, where I also taught several courses. In undergrad, I studied photography and art history in my parents’ hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. My love for photojournalism began early – when I claimed my grandfather’s piles of National Geographic magazines that he hoarded in his trailer in Kentucky after he passed away. As a perpetually curious person, I read endlessly and ask a lot of questions. Whether through films or photographs—my aim is to promote critical thinking, understanding and respect. I'm most drawn to making work that examines how environmental and economic changes affect marginalized or indigenous communities. I'm currently producing films for several NGOs that deal with issues related to women and children’s healthcare and education in India. Michael Hanson is an Oregon-based photographer/director represented by National Geographic Creative. His awards include POYi, Communication Arts, PDN30, America's Top Travel Photographers, and Images of the Year for Portraiture, along with others from National Geographic, PDN, Banff, Rangefinder, FYI Folio, American Advertising Federation. Michael's photography career began after playing Minor League Baseball for the Atlanta Braves. His work has taken him to over 25 countries around the world. He completed his first book, a project documenting urban farming in America, titled Breaking Through Concrete in 2010 and directed and DP'd his first documentary film, Who Owns Water, on a river in his native South. In 2018, he DP'd and walked across Costa Rica for an upcoming documentary film. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times and Outside Magazine. My name is Kevin Balmer, aka Diggable Monkey, and I've been in the freelance business of video production for the past 13 years. I've witnessed the vast evolution of the video media landscape in that period. I specialize in short and long-form documentaries mixed with a good dose of commercial ad work. My company brand is heavily associated with the arts and design arena, with a significant amount of subscription-based online course development. I run a small documentary/commercial production shop outside Portland, OR. Shooting with FX6, FS7, A7SII, Mavic Pro 3 and DJI Ronins, I've shot and edited videos for non-profits and corporate clients in locations from Portland, OR to rural Georgia to Indonesia. I work solo, with my brother, and larger crews depending on the client and scope. I am a FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot and have flown and shot footage in urban to wilderness settings. Originally from the Midwest, I currently live in Portland, Oregon with my wife, Melissa, and our two dogs and cat. I received my MFA in Film and Television Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and a BA in Film Studies from the University of Michigan. I'm currently directing a documentary on the Rose City Riveters, the supporters group for the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. Michael Hull is a producer, director, and editor from New York City, relocated to Portland, Oregon. His feature documentary BETRAYAL AT ATTICA premiered on HBOMax on August 1, 2021. He was a producer on the film WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES, distributed by Independent Lens in 2024. He was awarded a Pulitzer Center grant in October, 2024 to cover the Georgian parliamentary elections for MSNBC's Ali Velshi show from Tbilisi, Georgia. Hull was the lead video producer for the Fusion Media Group election unit in 2015/16, and was an editor at CBS News from 2010-2015.
