5 reviewsCristian Carretero is a filmmaker originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He graduated with a B.A. in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College, and also studied cinematography at FAMU (Prague). In 2014 he received his MFA from New York University. His films are mainly concerned with the contemporary Puerto Rican and Caribbean reality. In 2016 he won two Emmy Awards for producing the documentary “Semillas” and the science television show “LCC” both made for WIPR TV. His original work has screened at BAM Cinematek, Anthology Film Archives, Montreal Film Festival, Denver Film Festival, Habana Film Festival, Sydney Latin American Film Festival, San Francisco Short Film Festival, Clermont Ferrand Film Festival, just to name a few.
In 2013 his acclaimed short about dominican immigration, "Yolanda" won Best Short Film at the Festival de Cine Global Dominicano, Screen Loud Film Festival at the Anthology Film Archives, and the Carl Lerner Award for social significance, among other international recognitions. His short film "This Island”, commissioned by the French Institute, won Best Short by at the Festival de Cine Europeo. In 2015 he produced the experimental short “Diptico” commissioned by the “Santurce es Ley” urban art festival. In 2016 he finished a short shot in Harlem, New York, titled “The Ticket”, which debuted in the Habana Film Festival. He currently works as a freelancer collaborating with companies including National Geographic, CNN, i24, CienciaPR, among others.
