I covered breaking news at night in the New Orleans area for three years, which brought me to crime scenes such as this one, in which police were not forthcoming with information so finding eyewitnesses proved crucial. I had to befriend a bartender and wait very patiently to track down the witness in this story.
Over the course of my work, I interviewed and wrote about a number of shooting victims, including survivors. Gilbert "Manny" Ceaser was riding home from work with his girlfriend and young child when he crossed paths with a gunman who was shooting people at random. Ceaser woke to find he had been paralyzed but continued to hope for a miraculous recovery.
Before covering crime and breaking news, I wrote features on food, drinks, the arts, and entertainment for NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune. This piece on a gigantic po-boy served by Katie's Restaurant formed part of a series on over-sized meals found in New Orleans.
