Cats, cuddly toys and a portrait of Stalin: the last lift lady guarding Tbilisi’s brutalist skybridge
In the Georgian capital, 70-year-old Abkhazia war veteran Mzia Sabanadze manually operates the pay-as-you go elevator to the bridge connecting the once-futuristic brutalist Nutsubidze apartment blocks. Surviving on £90 monthly pension, she lives and works alone in a small studio apartment behind the elevator every day and night, greeting the tourists and bearing the nostalgia of the Soviet times and the history of these blocks.
