“Cholitas” are Bolivian women with indigenous heritage known for their colorful attire, round top hats and ornate earrings. In the world’s highest capital city of La Paz, Bolivia, 11 Cholitas are on a mission to overcome sexism and discriminatory attitudes and climb mountains in their traditional garb. Led by Jimena Lidia Huaylas, the Cholita Climbers were once high-mountain cooks. But since December 2015, they’ve been ascending the country’s snowy peaks as mountain climbers. United by their love of mountains and a sense of defiance, the Cholita Climbers will stop at nothing to attain the feeling of freedom that comes from scaling great heights.

Mariano is an Emmy nominated documentary director, producer and cinematographer based in Brooklyn, NY.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, he came to New York City, 13 years ago. 

Until recently, and for the past five years, he worked as an in house filmmaker at CNN’s documentary unit “Great Big Story” where he made some of the most cinematic (and highest viewed) videos on the internet.

Before CNN, Mariano worked at VICE Media for 5 years, creating original content about food, music, news, travel, and culture.

He’s a proud alumni and film major of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he has since returned as a guest lecturer on documentary film.

Mariano loves to cook, especially dishes from his native Peru (including an excellent family ceviche recipe) and has a growing collection of Latin American records.
