In Zimbabwe, there are 19 psychiatrists in the whole country, meaning 90% of people won't receive treatment. Dr. Dixon Chibanda, the founder of Friendship Bench Zimbabwe, is attempting to close this gap with a surprising solution: training grandmothers in evidence-based therapy to treat people in their communities at no cost. I was given the inredible opportunity to go to Zimbabwe to meet Dr. Dixon Chibanda, the Friendship Bench staff, and many of these grandmothers, and to spend a few days witnessing their inspiring work in action.
