As Myanmar opens up to foreign investment after decades of dictatorship, a big land grab is underway. Companies with ties to the military are kicking the rural poor aside to get rich — and not sharing much of the spoils. In Letpadaung, hundreds of farmers have been displaced from their ancestral villages to make way for a massive, China-backed copper mining project. But some are fighting back.
The proposed Nicaragua Canal could be one of the largest engineering projects in history and promises to bring thousands of jobs to the impoverished country. But the government’s secretive deal with a Chinese-led firm has some Nicaraguans raising the alarm about displacement and environmental destruction in the canal’s path.
We embedded for a week with Thai National Rangers to track Cambodian tree thieves crossing into a Thai National Park to illegally cut down endangered Rosewood trees for their deep red wood, highly prized in China. We then head to Cambodia to get a closer look at the company thought to be behind this illicit operation and gain access to their warehouse where we see the timber for ourselves.
