Acting programme editor
I was acting programme editor at eNCA - South Africa's first 24- hour news channel. In this position, I lead the editorial tasks of the production desk, the control room, the anchors and reporters. The show focussed on 4-6 minute interviews covering the main news of the day. Duties - Deliberate on guests and story angles with the team, including anchors - Compile a comprehensive diary for the show - Present the show plan to the team, including the anchors, during the 6am meeting. The detailed show plan includes; the events that need to be taken live, stories that need to be monitored, stories that need to be verified, bites that need to be cut for the second sweep, what stories need to be boxed in a split-screen. I also assign a producer to possible breaking news crawlers and squeeze-backs. - Assign the production desk's duties - Request the necessary video walls from the graphics department and the visuals for headlined stories and overlay for interviews from the logistics department - Send a show plan and the guest list to the duty editors, who are located in eNCA's Johannesburg office. - In preparation for the show, QC (quality check) the visuals that may be aired, packages produced by reporters and bites from previous interviews to be used in the show. QC the spelling in on-air straps, go through scripts to cross-check facts and whether the writing is in line with the feel of the show. In addition, prepare straps for the split-screen boxes that need to be on standby. To aid the team, also step in to write scripts when the need arises. - Write headlines, promos and layout the run down in a comprehensive yet creative way constantly keeping in mind that the viewers need to have a hook to remain tuned in to our channel. - Liaise with reporters in the field and placed them in the bulletin in a creative way so as to ensure that their stories are not lost amongst the other content. - At 9am, when the bulletin airs, lead the team from the control room.
