We produce motion pictures that explore the human relationship to the ocean and the outdoors.  Our post-production staff of 16 builds on an active network of outdoor field production personnel in 55 countries worldwide.  We have been ranked among the Global Top 100 Production Companies by Realscreen and nominated for Emmy awards for Outstanding Director and Outstanding Science and Technology Program.  

We are constantly driven to visually re-articulate experience through story, and to adopt new formats and tools as they appear.  In 2003, we created and developed “Experiential” or "Slow TV," born from our Sunrise Earth series (Discovery Communications). In 2007, we co-founded BlueMarvel, a distributor of Slow TV programming. Beginning in 2011, we've developed video installations for gallery exhibition and museums (Auschwitz Memorial Museum in Poland).  In 2015, we produced our first Ultra High Definition 4K on-demand video-streaming series, titled Big Picture Earth (CuriosityStream). We have worked with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) in filming UHD 4K aerial footage worldwide, and were among the first production companies to apply for -and receive- FAA exemption for commercial operations.  In 2016, we developed 360VR capacity, with productions in Europe and the South Pacific.  Our global workflow was developed between 2012 and 2017. During this period, on behalf of clients seeking web videos 3 to 10 minutes in length, we produced or licensed over 2,000 programs, at an average rate of 1.6 productions per day.  We've caught our breath a bit since then. Our newest launch is Expanding the Trust, an initiative to support America's land trust movement, working closely with individual trusts across the country to build storytelling tools and capacity.

In February of 2014, Compass Light Founder and Director David Conover launched the Conservation Media Group, a non-profit initiative working to support filmmakers, activists, and organizations who are providing sanctuary for marine life, reducing ocean plastic at source, and transitioning societies to a low-carbon and just economy.

I was making a documentary in Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi for UNHCR when I met Tresor, a Congolese refugee. His story and mission seemed like a great story that had to be told. Using crowd-funding, Tresor raised enough money to take the most talented musicians from the refugee camp to the capital city, Lilongwe, and record an album.

Josh Povec has been making films about the human experience on this wild planet for the last 20 years. Josh grew up on the coast of Maine and earned a BA in Documentary Arts from Colorado College. He joined Compass Light from 2004 to 2013 and was the senior editor on the 64-part Discovery Channel series SUNRISE EARTH.

Josh recently returned to Maine after five years in Colorado where he lead creative teams at 3 Strings Productions, Inkwell Media and ROAM Media from pre-production to distribution. Under his tenure as the chief of staff of ROAM Media, the adventure film startup built an audience of more than 1.5 million followers in it's first year of operation. His clients include National Geographic, Toyota, Land Rover, Yeti, Adidas, Dell, Sony, Cannon, Red Bull. Josh's editing and producing credits include 70+ hours of broadcast television as well as the award winning films Desert Ice, Lines to Hawaii, and Poumaka.

Neil Shaw has been producing short videos, inserts and documentaries around Africa and beyond since 1999. He is both a field producer, experienced in organising and logistics in often tricky locations, as well as a creative: broadcast journalist, cameraman and editor with all his own equipment. Neil is therefore a one-man-band, but has also led teams when working on bigger budget productions. Neil is Cape Town and Athens (Greece) - based (he is South African) and since 1999 he has worked in 33 African countries (as well as Europe and China) producing over 200 shorter videos and inserts (3 to 12 minutes long) and fifteen documentaries (10 to 48 minutes long). He has produced for Al Jazeera English (two "Witness" documentaries), the United Nations (numerous short videos and two documentaries), Associated Press TV ("Horizons", about 174 inserts), South African broadcasters, and much more.
