STAND AND DELIVER
PASSWORD: delivery During Argentina’s six-month mandatory lockdown – the longest in the world – delivery apps experienced a 400% increase in use, connecting quarantined customers to restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and other services. Facing high unemployment and economic uncertainty, many young people have “become their own boss,” and now make fast cash by logging on when they want and where they want to fulfill clients’ orders. While delivery riders were deemed “essential workers” by the Argentine government, many say they feel “disposable” due to a lack of government oversight and regulation of their high-risk labor. Through “The Dark Side of Delivery,” viewers of XYZ MEDIA will be drawn into the dynamic night scenes of riders on the city streets, the voices of young people navigating the country’s worst economic crisis since 2001, and how algorithms affect everyday lives.
