Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing has worked as a freelance filmmaker in Myanmar since 2006, acting as director, producer, editor, and sound recordist after attending film schools in both Myanmar and Germany. Her documentary short Burmese Butterfly played festivals in more than 20 countries, including Sheffield Film Fest , and her experimental film, PERIOD@PERIOD won for Best Short at the Wathann Film Festival. Midwives is her feature documentary debut. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and won the Excellence In Verité Filmmaking World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award. Midwives won the best film award at One World Human Rights Film Festival in Prague and Asian Competition Grand Prize and Next Award at DMZ International Film Festival. Midwives has been screened at more than 40 international festivals (including CPH:Dox, Hot Docs, San Francisco Film Festival, DOK.fest Munich, Sheffield and in the "Best of fests" section at IDFA). MIDWIVES has been sold to 16 countries so far and has won several awards, including at Sundance. The film was released in Germany and the UK and is currently on the longlist for the German Documentary Film Award. It was preselected for the German Film Award and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in the USA. She is base in Germany since 2022 and frequently travel to Thailand for her new film projects.
