Request QuoteI am an independent documentary photographer and journalist currently based in Italy. I write articles, interviews and carefully captioned photo essays in Italian and English. I primarily focus on human stories framed in their cultural or sub-cultural context to delve into social, political and economic ramifications. I pay special attention to evolution of traditional lifestyles adjusting to new realities, with increasing awareness of the climate change’s impact. I work as a freelance photographer since 2002. I have worked in Middle East, South America, the Pacific Ocean, the Balkans, covering cultural, social and political issues, from disappearance of ancient traditions, gentrification and refugees to street protests and terrorist attacks. After settling in Turkey in 2011 I began contributing to Italian daily “La Repubblica” and international media and agencies. I covered mass protests in 2013-2014, terrorist attacks in 2015-2016 and the inflow of refugees from Syria. I reported live from Ankara on the night of the July 15th coup attempt for major international outlets. After moving back to Italy because of family problems, I kept covering Turkish political and social issues with articles, interviews and analyses, especially regarding relations with Italy and EU. After a forced hiatus, I am now based in Genoa and I travel as much as I can in Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean looking for stories that escape attention of main stream media but beg to be told for their social cultural or visual value. I write professionally in Italian and English. I speak and think in English, I can travel in Spanish and French and I know enough Turkish to live and make friends. Little known even inside Turkey, camel wrestling attracts huge crowds in the seasonal events, in as brutal and spectacular as harmless fights. The biggest yearly tournament is in Selçuk, near Ephesus, where I photographed he fights, the circus around it and the "camel beauty pageant" that precedes the fight, interviewing spectators, camel owners and handlers.
At the time of the 100th anniversary of the 1915 mass killing of Ottoman Armenian population, that modern Turkey refuse to label as "genocide", I met and interviewed a prominent Turkish singer of Armenian ancestry, shooting photos of him at a concert too.
