Syrian migrants who arrived in the Balkans were forced to flee the brutal conflict and repression under Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, escalated as the Assad government responded violently to protests, driving millions to seek refuge. Many Syrians passed through the Balkans as a transit route to Western Europe, while some chose to stay in countries like Serbia, Bosnia, and North Macedonia due to challenges in continuing their journey or finding shelter.
