Putting The Hammer Down: A Short Film About Ionia
Ionia is an intentional community in Kasilof, Alaska. It was established in 1986 by five families who essentially fled modern society to experiment with a new way of living together.
They all met in Boston while eating and living according the principles of macrobiotics.
Today the community is flourishing with other 100 members. They are on their third generation of children.
This film is my attempt to describe the peaceful, meditative state of being at Ionia. Life there is slow and deliberate.
When I first arrived, I asked a resident about the details for breakfast the following morning.I wanted to make sure not to miss it, so as not offend my hosts. He told me, "if you're asleep, be asleep. If you're awake, be awake."
