News that a 17-year-old schoolgirl being attacked with acid in broad daylight has reopened old wounds for acid attack survivors in India. According to national crime data, there were over 1,000 cases filed over acid attacks reported in India between 2017 to 2021. Though the Supreme Court banned over-the-counter sales of acid in 2013, it remains widely available.
