As companies rush to the bottom of the oceans to mine rare earth minerals that could power future technology, conservationists push back on impacts on fragile marine ecosystems. As sunlight filters through the ocean’s surface in dazzling streaks, the water below teems with life. Tiny fish flit between scattered beds of seaweed; larger animals glide effortlessly with the current; algae blooms fill the scene with a dreamlike haze.
