Manipur one of the border states in the northeastern of India, is in a state of turmoil due to the nearly eleven months old Kuki-Meitei ethnic conflict. All kinds of weapons be it firearms or social media is used to project and promote each side of the story. But it comes to an immense human cost with over 60000 people displaced especially the young school going children taking up the total of 14,736 who are considered the future pillars of the nation.
Children, considered as the future pillars of the nation are the most vulnerable victims of conflict due to many factors. In Manipur’s relief camps children are slowly slipping into depression and even suicidal as they faced an uncertain future due the on-going ethnic war that broke out on May 3rd at Churachandpur. Education in emergencies, a process of teaching and promoting education for children, youths and adults is paramount, as conflict can have a negative impact on children’s self-esteem.
Lack of basic amenities, sufficient food, income and material resources, malnutrition, no access to proper education and medical care are some of the many challenges face by the internally displaced people in Manipur’s relief camps. However, some have started engaging in livelihood activities to ensure sustainable livelihood. But will these activities enough to sustain a livelihood and how long will they carry on like this.
Manipur goes to the polls in two phases--on 19th April for inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency and April 26th for the outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency at the backdrop of almost one year old ethnic conflict. The public perception is that this election as very untimely and imposed on them.
