For 1 week we went to meet the most underprivileged of New Delhi. Slum-dwellers, homeless people, orphans. How do they experience confinement? How are they preparing to deal with Covid-19?
India is obsessed with its stars - from the entertainment world to cricket. An insatiable thirst for celebrity gossip and glimpses into their personal lives means there is never a shortage of paparazzi hovering close by, ready to capture that candid moment. The photographers are often poorly paid and subject to violent tirades by those they follow, but many revel in the adrenaline of the chase.
India has surpassed China as the world’s most populous country. Driven by states like Bihar, the country's population is forecast to continue growing. With Bihar’s fertility rate much higher than the national average, authorities are using a raft of family planning measures, including incentives for sterilisations, which critics say places the burden unfairly on women. Home to more than 120 million people, competition for jobs is tougher than ever as the state struggles to curb its high unemployment rate.
Karmila, Devi and Thesa are an exception in Indonesia. Their job as female motorcycle stunt riders is to perform in the ‘Devil’s Barrel’, riding their bikes on the vertical walls of a two-storey tall cylinder. They move from village to village in travelling funfairs, accompanied by their fellow male riders. While critics accuse them of not being ‘good women’ for working in the male-dominated carnival world, others applaud them for breaking stereotypes in the increasingly conservative Muslim-majority country. Follow their journeys as they travel from Java to Sumatra, especially Aceh and through their portraits, discover their courage and passion for their work, and the many obstacles and challenges lying in wait for them.
