There is a countrywide protest today for Sabeen Mahmud in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad press clubs at around 5PM Pakistan time. Would be great if you could arrange to send some visuals and vox pops (18-35 age group) from preferably Karachi. Every Friday night dozens of donkey carts take to the streets of Karachi. They're driven by 'Sheedi' or black Makranis, a minority group from the coastal areas of Balochistan, descended from African migrants. Donkey cart racing is a cultural tradition the Makranis claim to have inherited from their African forefathers. Thousands of slaves from Africa were brought to coastal Balochistan by Arab traders, who also ruled parts of the province. Over time Makrani influence and culture thrived beyond and spread to Karachi. These riders originate from the city's Lyari area - home to at least 600,000 Makranis. They say the weekly races are a celebration of their culture. Our piece tells their story.
