the Dying Marshes of Iraq
The marshes of Iraq, the area where the first human civilization was ever found, where the Sumerians once lived some 5,000 years ago. The marshes, used to be the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East, home to hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, at least 40 fish species, some quarter of a million people and many mother unique animals. Now, the area has shrunk to a third of its size with only a few thousand people remaining.
