MALAWI MICE HUNTING

Traditionally the mice are hunted by the Ngoni people in Malawi and can be easily found displayed for sale at different local markets. Mulandi one of the boys who was selling the mice told me that he hunts the mice in his home village and travells with them to Lilongwe for sale.The most widelly eaten species is locally known as Kapuku and often found in cultivated fields where they feed on on grains, friuits, grass and sometimes insects.Kapuku has gray to brown fur which are identical to a house rat but with a shorter tail. The kapuku mice breeds heavily during the harvesting period between June and July.During this period Mulandi and his friends go hunting for the mice in the maize fields.To catch the mice, they dig them up in their holes and chase after them as they stumble and fall.However for them to catch them in bulk Mulandi and his friends dig medium seize holes, along the mices regular tracks and put clay clay pots filled with water into these holes.The mouth of the pot is smeared with fried maize husks.As some of the mice fight for miaze husks, they fall into the pot and drown. Folloing the catch the mice are then cooked, salted, dried, strung on sticks and sold to those with an appetite for the local delicacie.Over the years Malawi has had cases of the Bubonic plague in the Nsanje district of the country.The plague which as a fatality ratio of up to 60 percent is transmitted by rats.
