Request QuoteI am an award-winning journalist with over 15 years of experience in the industry, based in central Appalachia. At heart I'm a newspaper writer. My writing has been published in major publications including The Guardian, The New Republic and Rolling Stone Country. But I've also had success (and a lot of fun) producing audio stories for West Virginia Public Broadcasting and short documentary films for media outlets and corporate clients. I have also worked as a fixer for outside journalists, drawing on a lifetime of connections to help my clients find authentic stories in this often misunderstood slice of America.
This short film, produced for the WVU Extension Family Nutrition Program, tells the story of Leslie and Joe Owens — owners of Mountain Ears Popcorn. It follows their product through growing, harvesting and processing, highlights the Owens' personal story and provides a tutorial for making the best popcorn at home.
I have produced over a dozen audio stories and three short documentary films for West Virginia Public Broadcasting's "Inside Appalachia." This short film focuses on LEe Orr's handmade fly fishing rods, which he painstakingly crafts from bamboo in his basement workshop.
I've produced over a dozen audio stories and three short films about Appalachian culture for West Virginia Public Broadcasting's magazine show "Inside Appalachia." This one features an elementary school where students still learn the old-school game of marbles. We use this as a jumping off point to explore the last remaining industrial marble manufacturer in the United States, which also happens to be in West Virginia.
For this NPR Music project, I directed a short documentary about rapper Shelem at Jerry Run Summer Theatre and wrote two accompanying articles. The film cuts between Shelem interviewing Jerry Run's owner Dusty Anderson and a performance by the rapper on Jerry Run's stage. The accompanying articles offer a deeper dive into Shelem's background as a young rapper growing up in a place without a hiphop scene, and what drove Anderson to build a theater in his extremely rural hometown.
In each episode, Appalachian Care Chronicles follows a different healthcare professional working in West Virginia and explores how they do their jobs, why they ended up in these careers and what keeps them passionate about their work.
As multimedia specialist with the WVU Extension, I wrote, directed, filmed and edited this secret agent-themed short film to kick off the "Grow This Throwdown" — a statewide gardening competition. This film won silver for "best video advertising" at the Social Marketing Awards, presented by the Social Marketing Association of North America
