Vivek is a Journalist, filmmaker and photographer working on extended documentary projects.
He has dedicated his career towards chronicling through photography, film and prose, the rich tapestry of indigenous communities in one of Asia's most diverse regions. With great detail, Vivek has documented the ongoing cycles of violence and displacement within the various ethno-linguistic groups vying for recognition and security in the face of land disputes and changing demographics in India’s far east.
Vivek's remarkable work in western Assam garnered him well-deserved recognition, including The Manuel Rivera Grant for Documentary Photography in 2013. This honour not only served as validation for his dedication but also provided crucial support for him to continue his important work in this troubled region during the time. His compelling images were showcased alongside other esteemed photographers at the renowned photography festival, Les Recontres D'Arles.
Through his work, Vivek illuminates the complex realities and untold stories of these indigenous communities, shedding light on their struggles, resilience, and cultural heritage. His imagery serves as a powerful testament to the often overlooked diversity and challenges faced by these marginalised groups within the larger tapestry of Asia's cultural landscape.
Vivek has worked across South Asia for various editorial publications including, The Wall Street Journal, California Sunday Magazine, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Columbia Journalism Review, Los Angeles Times, Al Jazeera, Der Spiegel, Fortune Magazine US, Buzzfeed News (US), The New York Times(India Ink-Blog), The Globe and Mail (Report On Business Magazine), Fast Company Magazine, CNN and Turner, Bill and Melinda gates Foundation and The Caravan Magazine(India).
Vivek was part of a Telly Award winning team for short documentary in 2022 on Covid widows titled “Covid Widows: Rajubai” and part of the team for a Webby nominated short documentary in 2020 titled “Covid’s Beautiful Strangers”.
