Being of mixed races, I have always enjoyed many of the privileges of being Black, but have faced none of the consequences. I became inspired to better understand the Black experience at Middlebury—not by internalizing the experience, but by opening myself up to those already in this space.
Since 1985, George Matthew Jr. has been the official carillonneur of Middlebury College, delighting the campus and surrounding community with the cascading harmony of 48 bells from on high in the tower of Mead Chapel.
