She has worked for BBC News for 8 years, as a news writer, social media producer and as BBC Verify's Digital Video Lead in its inaugural year. For the BBC, she has reported on the environment and Brexit, covered two US elections from Washington DC, and produced long and short form documentaries on Iran's women's movement and Russia's war in Ukraine. She has also worked for PBS NewsHour, Deutsche Welle, Univision, Huffington Post and others. She spent 3 years in Bangladesh as a journalist and communications specialist. Soraya speaks four languages, and has masters from Columbia University School of Journalism.

Waste-to-energy facilities, which are modern-day incinerators, currently receive less than 15 percent of the city’s trash. New York City Lens visited the country's largest waste-to-energy company to see the processes first hand.
