The Hamlet by ASAI Hotels – Sustainability Through Design In December 2018, Team ASAI created The Hamlet at Wonderfruit as a living, breathing example of our values, and we want to give you a peek behind the scenes to see how we did it. Wonderfruit is an annual festival of food, music, art and ideas, created to inspire participants to explore the adventure of living sustainably. At ASAI, we’re all about bringing people together and finding fun ways to reduce our impact on the environment, so building a camp at Wonderfruit was a no-brainer. The Hamlet was a multi-level structure, with places to eat, drink, lounge and dance. Every step of its concept and execution was rooted in recycling and reuse, with all inputs and outputs planned to be as environmentally friendly as possible. All the operations and processes were implemented to minimise energy consumption, space and materials, while maximising representation of local identities through design elements, traditions and flavours. The framework was built from bamboo, which is not only sustainable but also an icon of Thai culture. The fabric shades were recycled bedsheets, tie-dyed by local artisans. Comfy cushions and signature Thai triangle pillows were sourced from or sewed by locals too. Then with the structure in place, we filled it with a community. With drinks from bars and brands we love, food from a heritage restaurant in Yangon (where ASAI will soon be opening) and DJs from our neighbourhood, we created a platform for local talent and a chance for festival-goers to experience it firsthand. This is one and the only overseas episode of the food documentary series "On The Way To Night Dishes" from WeTV, Tencent. Chinese immigrants from Tae Chew, China, brought their culture and cuisines to Thailand over the past hundreds of years, merged and widely contributed in shaping the Thailand nowadays. This film is about a Chinese Thai family thrived in Bangkok with their boiled rice with grouper (khao tom pla) and ethics passed down through the generations.

Dualism of: Day and night, you and me, tradition and technology, old and modern, sacred and scary, futurism and nostalgia, black and white, up and down, left and right, manufactured and natural made, head and foot, sky and ground, lure and flee, water and fire, myself in and out of dream, dry and rainy, torture and enjoy. As all, it is the trip made by loops of sleep and awake, in one day and another.
