Patch Notes: Caterina Barbieri
For this episode of Patch Notes, we travelled with Caterina Barbieri to Sicily and recorded a session near the summit of Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Amidst bubbling lava flows, Barbieri performed live versions of ‘At Your Gamut’ and ‘Terminal Clock’, taken from her 2022 album, Spirit Exit. The session was filmed in as part of our recent documentary on Barbieri, which followed the Italian musician as she returned to live performance following the pandemic and debuted the light-years concept around Europe. “I like to think of sound as a spiral that connects the physical world with the metaphysical world,” she explains in the film. Barbieri’s music, which combines modular synthesis, vocals and other instrumentation, has evolved across several albums including Patterns of Consciousness and Ecstatic Computation. On 16 June, Barbieri will release a sister album to Spirit Exit titled Myuthafoo, which was largely written while touring with a process that responded to the “nomadic, interactive energy” of life on the road. Caterina Barbieri: light-years
Over the past 10 years, Italian composer Caterina Barbieri has created transcendent musical experiences, combining modular synthesis with vocals and other forms of instrumentation to create a distinctively emotive musical signature, most notably on her albums Patterns of Consciousness and Ecstatic Computation. For Barbieri, music is the meeting point of the material and the immaterial. “I like to think of sound as a spiral that connects the physical world with the metaphysical world,” she tells Fact in our new film exploring her performance and practice. “In that sense sound really brings you outside of your ego and your physical boundaries.” Following the isolation of the pandemic, Barbieri found herself craving shared artistic experiences. She launched a new platform and live concept called light-years and released an album, Spirit Exit, all of which had musical collaboration at their heart. In this film, shot by Fact as Barbieri returned to live performance and debuted the light-years concept around Europe, the artist shares her innermost thoughts on music, sound, composition and collaboration amidst exclusive live footage shot at Berlin’s Metabolic Rift, London’s Southbank Centre, Italy’s Nextones Festival and the volcanic environment of Mount Etna in Sicily. Bendik Giske – Not Yet
Bendik Giske is an artist and saxophonist whose practice frequently blurs the boundaries between performance, installation and music. Over two solo albums for Smalltown Supersound – 2019’s Surrender and 2021’s Cracks – Giske has pushed his instrument and body to the limit through circular breathing techniques that stretch and shape his tender compositions. In March 2021, Giske was commissioned by Oslo’s MUNCH Museet to create a new live work, Not Yet. Created in collaboration with sound artist Bridget Ferrill and featuring lighting and bespoke scenography by Theresa Baumgartner, Not Yet is a performance that explores ideas of queer time and ecstasy, drawing inspiration from the first passage of José Esteban Muñoz’s book Cruising Utopia, which references queerness as something glimpsed on the horizon that belongs to everyone. In this film, directed and produced by Fact’s Pedro S. Küster and featuring exclusive footage from the live performance of Not Yet, Giske discusses the many innovative techniques that go into creating his work, from circular breathing to using microphones mounted on the instrument to create different tonal qualities. Giske also discusses the inspiration behind Not Yet and the idea of ‘stepping out of the binary’ to create a unique tonal and spatial experience, one that communicates with both the audience and the performance environment.
