Iawá comes from Kuruaya, an Indigenous group from the Amazon rainforest. She says her people were forced to move continuously because of the encroachment of non-Indigenous profiteers. Iawá worked for non-Indigenous people, moving from place to place to harvest rubber, nuts, and more from her native forest. The constant movement led to a scarcity of people speaking Kuruaya. Iawá is now the last person on the planet known to speak it. According to researcher Philip Fearnside, forest loss caused by large dam development projects and the lack of laws and regulations protecting Indigenous peoples makes them more vulnerable than other populations. Dying Language: Belo Monte dam threatens indigenous lifestyles in Brazil
Iawá, also known as Odete Kuruaya, is one of the last fluent speakers of the Kuruaya language. Born in the early 1930s to a Kuruaya mother and a Xipaya father, Iawá and her family lived off the land, hunting and fishing, while cultivating a few crops such as cassava, corn, cotton and others, as she described in an interview in 2016. But a few years ago, the third-largest hydroelectric dam in the world, Belo Monte, was built a few miles from her territory. When the dam went into operation in 2016, it created a severe impact in the region.
