Lucas is an American filmmaker, primarily working in documentary as a director, cinematographer and editor. In addition to documentary, he has also directed and shot dance films, music videos and fashion commercials.
In 2012, the IFP at Lincoln Center listed Lucas as one of the top “Emerging Visions” in film, highlighting his ongoing filmmaking in Kazakhstan. He was also a 2012 Fellow at the New York Film Festival’s Artists Academy.
Lucas’ notable collaborations are as cinematographer on feature documentary Last Man in Dhaka Central (2015), a portrait of Dutch philosopher Peter Custers, directed by Naeem Mohaiemen. Last Man in Dhaka Central premiered at the 2015 Venice Biennale and was featured at the MoMA Documentary Fortnight in 2016, DocLisboa, and International Film Festival Rotterdam. Lucas also shot the feature length documentary OXD: One Extraordinary Day (2015), a portrait of choreographer Elizabeth Streb’s epic dance pieces that premiered during the London Olympiad in 2012. OXD premiered at DOCNYC, and continues to play at documentary festivals throughout the United States.
Lucas’ debut documentary short, Sacrifice: A Slaughterhouse Documentary (2010), has been viewed by tens of thousands of people online, and is one of the top user-rated videos on documentary.net. The film has been the object of praise and controversy -for its cinematography and atmospheric sound design, as well as its graphic subject matter.
