Beverly Jackson, head of YAHOO! Social Marketing, turned the Grammy Awards into the #Grammys. A leader in her field and yet she faces issues even at the top. She recently tweeted, “That awkward moment a colleague claims to have met you previously & suddenly realize they're referring to the ‘other’ Black Woman!” Today she goes from high level strategy to teaching seniors how to use social media.
Liza Donnelly addresses women and body image issues one drawing at a time. Through her weekly cartoons for the New Yorker, she speaks about marriage, divorce, work and aging, from a women's perspective. Humor is a powerful tool to question people's thinking and make them reflect on their every day behavior.
Brown Girls Burlesque was founded as a response to the white-dominated burlesque community in NY. Today, this group address topical issues through dance and theater. Their often sold-out performances and classes push the boundaries of how we see ourselves in terms of gender, race and our world.
Award-winning Anna Louizos is one of Broadway’s FIVE female set designers. 25 years in the industry and yet she still feels like she has to constantly prove that she can do it better. The NY State Council of the Arts stated that “Women are welcome at the front door of the theatre but not at the stage door.” Anna is setting an example that she and other women can do it, too...and damn well.
