In February 2019, the news of a gang of young men sexually abusing women and filming such acts on mobile phones to blackmail the victims shocked Pollachi, a small, prosperous town in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This longform piece tried to investigate the truth behind some of the sensational claims made by politicians and the media.
The story was a profile of a fundamentalist Islamist organisation called Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) that claims to have a membership of more than a million in southern India. TNTJ came into the spotlight due to its alleged ideological affiliation with similar groups in Sri Lanka that are being investigated for the Easter bombings.
