About
Ryan Wilkes is a documentary cinematographer and director, and holds a PhD in Bioengineering.
His passion for photography was born when he moved to New Zealand in 2015 to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Inspired by the beautiful scenery around him, he and his camera became regulars in the back country of the South Island. Since then, Ryan’s adventures have included swimming with humpback whales in Tonga, exploring the remote fjords of northern Norway, tracking mountain gorillas in the impenetrable forest of Uganda, and paragliding off of the worlds tallest freestanding mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Ryan is capable of creating high-quality content as a one man band, and is accustomed to taking on multiple roles during production. He has produced, directed, shot and edited content for tourism boards and travel companies around the world. His adventure documentary, Fly The Roof, won a People's Choice Award at the 2021 VIMFF.
Outside of science, travel and adventure content, Ryan has experience shooting and editing videos for live events and music festivals.
