This investigative series developed out of breaking news. In November, 2015, it came into the newsroom that the remains of a child were found in a livestock pen. That child was 7-year-old, Adrian Jones. Adrian was tortured most of his life by his father and stepmom. Our investigation revealed Child Protective Services visited the home on numerous occasions but did nothing to remove Adrian.
Through court records we discovered the Kansas City Police Department has settled numerous cases of excessive force, which ultimately cost tax payers millions of dollars.
A local mortuary buried three people in the wrong graves. This information came to light when I spoke to a former employee of the mortuary who informed us of the mix up. We took the information to the families who had the bodies exhumed. DNA tests confirmed the bodies were in fact placed in the wrong graves. The owner is accused of knowing the mix up occurred and failing to notify the families.
