A Short Bio
Ambassador Andebrhan Welde Giorgis is President of Eri-Platform (EP), an international civil society association working to promote rule of law, human rights, and democracy via inclusive dialogue in the Diaspora communities and via online channels and discreet communication in Eritrea.
Andebrhan served as President of the University of Asmera, Governor of the Bank of Eritrea, Member of the Eritrean National Assembly, Eritrea’s Ambassador to the EU and several EU Member States (including Spain), Permanent Representative to UNESCO and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Special Envoy to the African Great Lakes Region, and Commissioner for Coordination with the UN Mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia. He has extensive experience as a freedom fighter, diplomat, academic, international negotiator, mediator and senior consultant. He is a founding Board member of the European Centre for Electoral Support, Senior Expert in the Global Governance Institute and Brand Ambassador of Wallonia, Belgium. He is also a senior research fellow in the Department of International and European Law at the Free University of Brussels.
Andebrhan has taught management, economics, African politics, diplomacy and international negotiations; worked as Senior Advisor for the International Crisis Group’s (ICG) Africa Programme; and advised the European Commission in the Preparation of the EU Strategy for the Horn of Africa. Educated at the University of Colorado and Harvard University, he has published numerous articles and a widely acclaimed book, Eritrea at a Crossroads: A Narrative of Triumph, Betrayal and Hope, whose theme is self-determination, nation building, state construction, democratic governance and sustainable development in Africa and Eritrea.
