Standoff between DC Police and Protestors Near Black Lives Matter Plaza
On June 22, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) attempted to push protesters occupying a portion of H Street near Black Lives Matter Plaza and across from Lafayette Square and the White House. Altercations with DC Police and protesters resulted in pepper spray being deployed. Police retreated after a peaceful march was formed. Protesters began to barricade the area, vowing to remain until demands were met. Signs put up around the barricade read BHAZ, or Black House Autonomous Zone. Later on protesters entered Lafayette Square and attempted to dismantle a statue of Andrew Jackson but resulted in US Park Police responding with rubber bullets, batons, and mace.
