She has thrice received the National Film Award for her feature length documentaries - Cotton for my shroud(2011), Candles in the wind (2013)& I cannot give you my Forest (2014). She specialises in production of non-fiction content, since last 25 years. Her films are about gender issues, environment, Aboriginal communities, education & culture of the Indian subcontinent. She started as a journalist and worked with 'India Express' for 7 years. As a journalist who travelled the length and breath of her country digging people's narratives from the margins and mainstreaming them finally found her niche in the documentary. Hard-hitting yet poignant, her films are portraits of an India which lives on the margins. Kavita is a producer, Director, cinematographer, script/content writer, voice artist & a photographer. She is bilingual and has an equally good command over English & Hindi. She can write & narrate in both the languages. She did her Masters in English Literature from Delhi University before training in journalism. She has produced films in the toughest terrains in India : Kashmir & north-east India. Kavita is also the co-founder of Top Quark Films, and, Quark Workshops (a skill- building & mentoring platform for filmmakers)- along with Nandan Saxena (DoP & Director).
