San Basilio de Palenque was declared one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. 4 times as dense as Manhattan, 493 fisherman and their families call this tiny island home. Located over 2 hours away by boat from Cartagena, not many people get the chance to set foot on this speck in the Caribbean Sea and interact with the happy inhabitants. While fresh water and produce must be shipped in by boat, the abundant sealife is enough to keep families there for generations.
